Whitehaven B&B

Whitehaven is a town and port on the west coast of Cumbria. It was chiefly created in the 17th century and developed then into a major coal mining centre. It became a substantial port as a result. There has been no coal mining in the area since 1986. The railway reached Whitehaven in 1847 and the town still has two railway stations. The major industry today is the nearby Sellafield nuclear complex. John Paul Jones led a naval raid upon the town in 1778 during the American War of Independence: reckoned to be the last invasion of England. Whitehaven is a complete example of planned Georgian architecture which has assisted the recent growth of tourism. The Millennium Harbour rejuvenation has led to 100 more moorings in the marina. Further investment has aided the development of other tourist attractions. There are a number of guesthouses and b&bs (bed and breakfast accommodation) in and around Whitehaven. There is also some hotel accommodation.
