Situated in an uncrowded corner of western Cumbria, Millom is a small coastal town on the north side of the Duddon Estuary. It can offer both the seaside holiday and the mountain and lake experience within a few miles. The Duddon Estuary and the coast going north towards Ravenglass, including the village of Haverigg, are especially notable for their extensive sand and dune system. Millom grew into considerable prosperity in the late 19th century after the discovery and development of iron ore. The workings closed in 1968 and the flooded area at Hodbarrow, surrounded by a sea wall, is now a fine RSB nature reserve. The railway station also houses the Millom Folk Museum with interesting displays especially showing the industrial past. Other industries declined after the iron and steel works closed but there are still some successfully operating in the town. Millom and its surrounding areas are well supplied with all types of holiday accommodation including a number of smaller hotels mostly with restaurants.
