Cockermouth is an old established town on the fringes of the Lake District. The town is at the confluence of the Derwent and Cocker rivers. It is less crowded than the more central and best known towns and villages in the Lakes, although it is close to Keswick (14 miles), Ennerdale, Crummock Water, Loweswater and Bassenthwaite Lakes. Nevertheless it is an attractive town partly because of its mainly Georgian architecture. William Wordsworth the famous Lakes Poet was born in Main Street. It is also the home of the Jennings brewery, well known among lovers of Real Ale. The town and area has plentiful accommodation of all types. There is an excellent choice of hotels, inns and guesthouses in the town and within a few miles distant. The hotels range from luxurious to no more expensive than a good guesthouse with restaurant and bar facilities to match.
