Lake District Self catering

Self catering accommodation in the Lake District.

The Lake District has a huge selection of quality self-catering accommodation available that is able to satisfy the most discerning of visitors.

Rental fees
Rental fees vary with the location and size of the property, its facilities and the time of year. They can range from a low of say £180 per unit per week out of season up to a high of £1,400 for a large property in high season (usually June, July and August).

Duration of rental
In the Lake District, it is possible to rent properties for a weekend or a few days in low season but they are invariably only for rent on a weekly basis during high season. Most properties are rented by the week starting on a Saturday but quite a few change-over on a Friday, so it is important to be sure that you know which one you are booking.

Beds
When searching for suitable self-catering accommodation, probably the first thing to check is that there are the right number of beds for your needs. Next, it may well be important whether the beds are doubles, twins or bunks. Bunks will be fine for teenagers or younger but not if your children are now in their twenties or thirties.

Prioritise
Location, children, pets, parking, isolation
Do you want accommodation right in town (or village), or on a farm or in a remote location? What about children or pets? Are they welcome and catered for? Is there enough parking on the property or nearby? Several village centres have permit parking. If you book a small terraced cottage there you may have to use the street or public car parks. Is the property within walking distance of a shop, pub or restaurant?

Patios, smokers, heating and 'ensuite'
Is there any outside seating: in a garden or on a patio, for hot summer evenings or just for the smokers in the party? None of the landlords and ladies these days welcome smoking indoors. Would you prefer more than one bathroom or toilet?

Have you always wanted to try a wood burning stove?
If you clearly identify your own priorities in this way, you can be sure that the accommodation you eventually book will really suit your needs.

Agents and owners
There are many agents with cottages and apartments on their books. Some specifically cover and are based in the Lake District and some cover the whole of the UK. Owners may also choose to advertise individual cottages on the internet and in brochures that can be ordered and received by post.

Sometimes there are a number of cottages and apartments on the same site, maybe in a hotel grounds or on an old country estate. They may be newly built or converted from old cottages or farm or estate buildings. Visitors may be given access to extra facilities based in the hotel or elsewhere on the site. A bar restaurant perhaps, or a swimming pool?

Windermere Marina Village
Windermere Marina Village, for example, is in Bowness on Windermere (lake). www.wmv.co.uk. It contains 29 luxury waterfront cottages and 18 apartments, all available to let. Serviced facilities, included in the rental, are the Spinnaker Club with its own leisure club, swimming pool and the Commodore Bar and Bistro.

Croft House Self Catering Holidays
Croft House Self Catering Holidays at Applethwaite, just over one mile from Keswick, offers five quality comfortable self-catering cottages.

All have spectacular views of the surrounding fells. They are just a few minutes drive away from the shores of Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite. Keswick has easy access to the Borrowdale and Newlands valleys and thence to Buttermere and Crummockwater.

Wordsworth Barn
Wordsworth Barn is a luxury 17th century barn conversion, renovated to a high modern standard while retaining its original character, with open oak beams. The Barn is in Patterdale, near Ullswater, a popular touring base in the north-east Lake District. The area offers activities such as walking, sailing, cycling, horse riding, country pursuits and outdoor adventure activities. Email: [email protected]
